A tip calculator removes all the friction from splitting a restaurant bill or figuring out a fair gratuity. The Emily Post Institute recommends 15–20% for full-service restaurants in the United States, but every situation is different. This tool gives you the tip, the new total, and the per-person split in one go.
How the tip calculator works
The math: tip = bill × (tip % ÷ 100), total = bill + tip, per person = total ÷ number of diners. Decide whether you tip on the pre-tax or post-tax total — both are accepted; the pre-tax convention is slightly cheaper for the tipper.
Worked example
A $74.40 dinner for three, tipping 18%: tip is $13.39, total is $87.79, and each person owes $29.26.
